Organiser boilerplate
Golden Square Chess Academy is a chess academy based in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, affiliated to the Thanjavur District Chess Association. It organises Vimana City’s International FIDE Rated Open, now in its second edition.
Points of interest
- A rated international outside the metros. This is one of very few FIDE rated international opens held in the Delta districts of Tamil Nadu.
- Free accommodation for every player. Hostel-type shared rooms at the venue itself, a short walk from the playing hall, opening from 4:00 PM on 4 August. Beds are available on a rental basis; accompanying persons pay ₹700 for the whole tournament.
- Eleven prize lists, not one. Open, three rating bands, unrated, Thanjavur players, and five age categories from Under 7 to Under 15 with boys and girls awarded separately.
- A ₹50,000 first prize for unrated players. Someone who has never held a rating can win fifty thousand rupees and an electric bike.
- The name. “Vimana City” is Thanjavur, after the vimana — the tower of the thousand-year-old Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site six kilometres from the hall.
- A separate rated Blitz. On the free afternoon of 8 August, 3+2, ₹2,00,000 prize fund.
